fuck fuck fuck fUCK odie (and panda?!) is/are sick, he had the slightest beginnings of ragged fins when i went to work today (about noon) and i wrote it off as him being a tail-biter because i believe he’s actually a rosetail & not whatever he was sold to me as because he has really really long fins like i expected some tailbiting to happen because the branching is rather extreme but i came home & he looks like a crowntail and i can see pinholes in his fins as well„„„„„„ currently treating his tank & panda’s (next door, they use all the same stuff tho) with Quick Cure for a few reasons:

  • panda’s fins look fine but he’s developed this strange black crescent on his face & he’s got a gold shimmer but i cant tell if this is him marbling or ?????? both him & odie seem to be flashing maybe? dont know?
  • i’m treating my show tank for ich and i use the same buckets so big cross-contamination risk there
  • odie also has a bit of gold ???
  • i initially thought they had velvet a few days ago/knew the tank probably had come in contact with ich so i blacked their tanks out (just in case it was velvet) & treated them for 3-4 days and all looked fine so i ended the blackout (this is the second/third day after) and all looked good until right now so i resumed what i was doing prior
  • this probably is very jumbled i am sorry

in my med cabinet i have:

  • melafix (lol)
  • bifuran+
  • maracyn-oxy
  • quick cure

i’m not seeing an labored breathing as of yet…. help???

both boys are in 4gal heated/filtered (cycled)/planted tanks. water params look fine.

When you say water parems look fine, you’re testing for ammonia too, right? Those five in ones don’t do it- The strip or liquid test is seperate. What sort a plants do you have in the tank? My betta kept pokin his fins with a plastic plant, so I took it out an replaced it. Could be the case here. I don’t /see/ anyfin too bad but I’d check ammonia levels an maybe put a bit a AQ salt in there as a precaution. I’d look it up to see how much is right for your 4 gal.

i’ve got the api master FW liquid kit ;) i’m about 85% sure it is velvet, so I’m treating with blackout/quick cure/temp raise/a half dose of AQ salt to help w/ oxygenation.

they both have dark(er) patches on them which can happen with velvet but can also look like an infection, but i am fairly certain this is parasitic and not bacterial„„, hint hint because of some rust/gold patches„„ however right now my primary worry is that i’m wrong :/ :/ :/

someone brought in a giant (GIANT!!! LIKE 8-9 inches!!!) pleeeeeecko (pl*co) to work today, it’s currently chilling in the koi tank. my manager thinks it’s just a common plec

but i am 99.99999% sure it is in the Pterygoplichthys family (Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus or Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps) like if this thing isn’t a sailfin pl*co then i obviously cannot count dorsal rays because it’s so obviously not in Hypostomus it hurts„„ there appears to only be one or two contributed pictures of P. multiradiatus soooooo who even knows, i can’t find any papers/articles on it either w/e

my money is on Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps like i would actually bet money on this ID lmao i’d start a betting pool at work but i think like an entire 3 of us actually care IDK IT’S A COOL FISH OK

let me remind you all that the only reason i passed vertebrate zoology is because i always got 90-100% on taxonomy/identification tests/labs. i believe the poor performance in every other fucking aspect of that course was failure to actually apply oneself

(gimme a break tho ok i was sick & had a psychotic gf that i swear to god purposefully sabotaged my exam study times)

the speech impediment of the 21st century (by Marc Johns)

I’ll fuck you up buddy this is not a speech impediment it’s linguistic evolution!! the existence of the phrase “Aisha was like” allows the speaker to convey whatever Aisha said without making the listener assume they’re quoting Aisha directly while still maintaining the FEELING of what Aisha said.
ie, Aisha said she didn’t want to go out with me VERSUS Aisha was like, “I’d rather kiss a Wookie”.
the addition of “XYZ was like” lets the speaker be more expressive and efficient and it is a totally valid method of communicating information!!

With the way language has evolved, this is one of the few ways I can even think of to express in casual conversation what someone said.
"So I said to Aisha," is certainly used, but if you remove the "so," which implies casual tone ("and" can be used in the same way), you get
"I said to Aisha," which is really formal in most English dialects/variations. I don’t know about all, but in New England dialects, you sound like you’re reading aloud from a novel.
"I told Aisha," is really only used when you continue to describe, not tell, what you told her. Ex: "I told Aisha that James was too punk for her" works while, "I told Aisha, ‘James is too punk for you’" crosses the line back into formalness of the "I said."
Things like “I asked” or “I answered [with]” are similar levels of casual and efficient to the “So, I said [or say, as many conversations about the past take place in present tense anyway, as if the speaker is giving a play-by-play in the moment]” but are specific to only certain situations.
"I was like, 'Marc Johns, what is your obsession with restoring archaic speech patterns and interfering with the natural progression of English from complex to efficient?'" envelopes all of these easily and is accessible and crisp, and allows for more variations on inflection than the others.
Of course, James is probably like, “I already fucking said that.” But eh, I tried adding on.
