Anonymous sent: What's your opinion on feeding live fish?

Don’t do it. Feeding WHAT live fish? I literally don’t know of a single animal that actually needs ‘feeder’ fish as part of a healthy diet. The whole ‘feeder’ fish thing is a scam pet stores run.

'Feeder' fish are really bad for turtles. MOST pet snakes if not all do not need live fish. What other myths are out there? scalestails

If there actually is some pet out there that needs live fish, I do not know of it.  And I imagine they could also be fed pre-killed if it was REALLY a necessity in their diet.

In rare cases and in cases of fish who have been conditioned to eat live fish (despite it not being their actual diet) need to be fed live fish.

Some piscivorous fish like Gar and snakeheads take time to convert over to frozen fish or dry foods. Datnoids and arowanas are also more inclined to eat live fish when young.

BUT I can’t think of any fish that needs them their entire life. Even fish eating fish don’t need LIVE fish. With patience and know-how you can convert the pickiest fish to frozen or freeze dried foods!

As an example, the arowana at work will eat ALGAE DISCS as easily as he will feeder fish. He does not need live food.

Okay, I’m going to partly disagree with this; some wild-caught fish need live fish in their diets, such as African leaf fish & diets of neon tetras. that’s what they eat in the wild & the fish can have issues actually seeing their food when fed frozen or flake or whatnot. i know a guy whose leaf fish nearly starved to death before he just started feeding live neons; but then again, African leaf fish are a bitch to keep & very uncommon in the hobby because of it.

many sources cite that live food (insects, snails, small fish) is incredibly beneficial to turtles, both nutrition & enrichment wise. imho opinion tho goldfish should never be used as live feeders; too much risk of disease/parasites, plus goldfish are like chicken nuggets and not healthy for them in the slightest.

also they are way too smart to be feeders lmao.

rosy red minnows & feeder guppies are what I recommend, as it’s easy to start your own feeder colony that you can make sure is healthy.

getting alpha, gamma, & zeta (my foster oscars) off of live goldfish was pretty easy: crickets & mealworms are much more omnomnoms to them lmao.

Anonymous sent: Are nerite snails as bad about multiplying as mystery snails? And do they need a filter, if I just had some of them in a planted 5 gallon?

Nope they don’t multiply in freshwater at all! They need brackish water to reproduce, which is why a lot of people like them so much. They will leave eggs all over but they aren’t viable.

I don’t believe they would need a filter as long as you do regular changes to keep the water quality good.

also I’d invest in one of those tiny siphons… nerites shit everywhere e_e

This is the world’s second biggest fish tank - so big that it’s even been named the Kuroshio Sea. Located in Okinawa, Japan, the aquarium houses an enormous tank that is some ten metres deep, 35 metres wide and 27 metres long. It is home to a dazzling variety of all the species found thriving around Okinawa, including giant soaring manta rays and the world’s biggest fish, the whale shark. The appearance of the main viewing room is dazzling, and the window is so clear that each year millions of visitors can believe, for a moment, that they have stepped into a magical underwater world.
